Firefighter bailouts
I believe this what Captain Howell meant when firefighters bailout head first spinning and sliding down the ladder.

JIM :)
More info:
PALOMAR MOUNTAIN ---- One person was seriously injured in a head-on crash that sparked a small bush fire Sunday morning, authorities said.
About 9:25 a.m., a sedan and Toyota Tundra pickup truck collided on East Grade Road, just west of Will Valley Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The wreckage blocked both lanes of traffic, and the sedan caught fire, the CHP said. Preliminary reports said that everyone made it out of the sedan before fire consumed it.
The flames ignited a small area of brush, which firefighters quickly extinguished, a fire dispatcher said.
One person was taken to the hospital by helicopter with serious injuries, the CHP said.
The road was cleared by 11:30 a.m.
And, yes, everyone was out of the sedan. No burns. :)

PT SATURDAY Morning 7:20am
Hey everyone I will be there tomorrow morning to help lead some PT. This is completely voluntary. Many have shown interest so we will begin at 7:20am-7:40am. Please arrive in PT gear ready to go. Don't forget your water. We will be doing a short Crossfit workout. Since there are many different fitness levels I thought this would be the best place to start especially since the Fire Academy has adopted Crossfit as their PT for the academy.
See You in the morning. Don't forget your water bottles.

How many EMTs does it take to Change a Light Bulb?
Q: How many EMT-Bs are needed to change a light bulb?
A: None, it’s an ALS procedure.
Q: How many EMT-Ps are needed to change a light bulb?
A: Four. One drives, one looks into the protocols book, one asks medical command for permission, and one changes the light bulb.
Q: How many EMT-Is are needed to change a light bulb?
A: In Alabama – one; in Alaska – one; in Arizona – two, if both of them have taken a con-ed class on changing light bulbs; in Arkansas EMT-Is can’t change light bulbs, but there is a rumor it’s going to change next year; In California – just one, but medical command has to be contacted; in Colorado – two; In Connecticut, they can only assist with changing light bulbs; in Delaware, it is up to their medical director…
Q: How many EMS instructors are needed to change a light bulb?
A: It doesn’t matter; we don’t have time to cover it in our class.
Q: How many old EMS instructors are needed to change a light bulb?
A: I can do it alone, but those new guys won’t do it even if ten of them are going to show up. Today’s classes are a joke. When I was younger, everybody could change a light bulb in two seconds with their eyes closed. And then our EMS system became what it is now. What a mess.
Q: How many career firefighters are needed to change a light bulb?
A: None. IAFF does not allow career firefighters to change light bulbs.
Q: How many volunteer firefighters are needed to change a light bulb?
A: Two, because only two will show up.
Q: How many old firefighters are needed to change a light bulb?
A: Change?
Q: How many fire instructors are needed to change a light bulb?
A: NFPA requires a minimum of two. Anything less is unsafe and has no place in today’s fire service.
Q: How many fire evaluators are needed to change a light bulb?
A: Four. One to lock out/tag out the switch, one to heel the chair, one to screw in the bulb, one for back up. Did you check for gasket when changing bulb? Were all tasks completed in a safe manner? “No” indicates automatic failure.

What not to wear
A personal story on why the PPE is important, even when you're hot and it's uncomfortable. Here's me during the Witch fire:
Note the lack of helmet (I left it in the truck) and the lack of shroud. And we won't even talk about the cotton bandanna...
Anyway, I got a couple decent burns on the back of my neck that night, which were not serious but hurt like the dickens for a week. Could have been avoided completely had I simply bothered to wear that helmet and shroud.

Useful info (from Philippe''s e-mail)
Thought I'd try a test post, and figured it might be useful to copy over the info that Philippe Tran sent out in e-mail before...

EMT 125 WILDERNESS FIRST RESPONDER
There is an interesting course at southwestern college that may be of interest. It is called "EMT 125 WILDERNESS FIRST RESPONDER" 4 units. Starts: 1/14/2010 Ends: 2/25/2010 at 06:00PM-09:45PM Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. The dates do conflict with the last week of the academy, however I assume it is possible to miss some of the classes for wilderness first responder if it is cleared with the professor. A certification can by earned through Wilderness Medical Associates. From what I heard it is a interesting class, here is a promotional youtube video from Wilderness Medical Associates which should be similar or close to similar to the class offered at southwestern. Just something that might be interesting to do once the academy is over.

San Diego County Fire Authority Academy Blog.
This blog is created on November 15,2009 as a means for members of Academy #7 to remain in communication during and after the academy. The fire service is a career field that is quite competitive, because that we should go for all possible opportunities that are available. It will be harder for us to know about the job opportunities if we do not form connections and keep each other informed. This blog will become beneficial because we are able to post any useful information we know of and make it widely available to others. Information such as job opportunities will help us achieve an career in the fire service. Other useful information such as available information such deadlines, certification training, firefighter 1 academies, and many others will be posted. There is no doubt in my mind that Academy #7 will be successful in obtaining careers in the fire service or anywhere else. The success of this blog relies on members of Academy #7 and of those who visit this site posting comments and helpful information. Together we can achieve our goals.
